Kilimanjaro 6 Days Marangu Route Climb

Trip Overview

Experience Mount Kilimanjaro on this six-day Marangu Route climb, one of the mountain’s established trekking approaches. The journey passes through cultivated foothills, lush montane rainforest, open moorland and the high-altitude landscape below the summit. Accommodation is in mountain huts, offering a different experience from camping routes. The itinerary includes time to walk steadily, take regular breaks and allow your body to adjust to increasing altitude. Your mountain team supports the trek with route guidance, meals as arranged, camp and hut logistics, and daily briefings about the next stage. Summit day is demanding and depends on weather, trail conditions and your health, so following the guide’s advice is essential. This route is suitable for trekkers who are comfortable with several consecutive days of walking and who prepare with training beforehand. The six-day schedule gives more time than the shortest Marangu itinerary, but no itinerary can guarantee summit success. Travel responsibly, keep a steady pace, drink water regularly and communicate any symptoms to your guide promptly.

Your Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Meet your guide and drive to Marangu Gate for registration and park formalities. After the briefing, begin walking through the montane rainforest on a well-used trail with roots, damp earth and changing vegetation. Take regular breaks, drink water and keep a steady pace rather than rushing uphill. Arrive at Mandara Hut, settle into the hut area and listen to the guide’s briefing about the next day.

Day 2

Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

After breakfast, leave the forest behind as the path climbs into heath and moorland with more open views of the mountain when the weather is clear. The walking day is longer and the air gradually becomes thinner, so maintain an even pace and tell the guide if you feel unwell. Arrive at Horombo Hut, have a meal and rest. The guide will review hydration, symptoms of altitude sickness and the following day’s plan.

Day 3

Acclimatization walk near Horombo

Use this day for a guided acclimatization walk in the Horombo area, following the route and altitude plan set by your guide. Walking higher and returning to the hut can help you experience the changing conditions while preserving time to rest. The terrain is open and exposed, so protect yourself from sun and wind, drink regularly and avoid unnecessary exertion. Return to Horombo Hut for a meal, equipment check and an early night.

Day 4

Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Continue upward across the broad alpine moorland toward Kibo Hut, where vegetation becomes sparse and the landscape increasingly rocky. This stage can feel demanding because of altitude, so walk slowly, take short breaks and follow the guide’s instructions. On arrival, eat, drink and organize the warm clothing, headlamp and personal items needed for the night ascent. Rest as much as possible while the guide explains the summit schedule and turnaround rules.

Day 5

Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and Horombo Hut

Begin the summit attempt at the time set by your guide, climbing slowly over steep, cold terrain toward Gilman’s Point and, if conditions and your health allow, onward to Uhuru Peak. The ascent is strenuous and the guide may turn the group around for safety; reaching the summit is not guaranteed. After time for photographs if successful, descend carefully to Kibo Hut and continue to Horombo Hut as specified in the confirmed itinerary.

Day 6

Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

After breakfast, descend through the moorland and back into the rainforest, taking care on steep or slippery sections. The long downhill walk can be tiring for knees and feet, so use trekking poles if you have them and take short breaks when needed. At Marangu Gate, complete the exit procedures and receive any applicable completion certificate if the summit criteria were met. Meet your driver for the transfer arranged in your booking.
