Kilimanjaro 8 Days Northern Circuit Route Climb

Explore Kilimanjaro’s quieter northern slopes on an eight-day Northern Circuit trek with broad views, varied camps and a summit attempt....

Trip Overview

This eight-day Northern Circuit Route climb explores the northern side of Mount Kilimanjaro after approaching through the western mountain landscape. The route is valued for its expansive views, quieter trails on many sections and a broad circuit around the upper mountain. Trekkers move from forest and heath into the Shira Plateau, then continue across open high-altitude terrain with views toward the northern plains and surrounding peaks. The itinerary balances steady daily progress with opportunities to rest at camp and prepare for the next stage. The summit attempt is physically demanding and can be affected by altitude, weather and trail conditions; reaching Uhuru Peak is never guaranteed. Professional guiding, sensible pacing and prompt reporting of symptoms are important throughout. This trek is suitable for hikers who have prepared for multiple consecutive days at altitude and who understand that comfort decreases as conditions become colder and thinner. The Northern Circuit rewards patience and preparation with a varied mountain journey rather than a rushed ascent.

Your Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Londorossi Gate to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Complete registration at Londorossi Gate and transfer to the Lemosho trailhead according to road conditions. Begin walking beneath the forest canopy, where roots, damp ground and occasional muddy sections call for careful footing. The guide will set a steady pace and explain how the group should communicate any discomfort. Reach Mti Mkubwa Camp, meet the crew’s camp team and enjoy a warm meal before resting.
Day 2

Mti Mkubwa Camp to Shira 1 Camp

Climb gradually out of the rainforest into heath and moorland, where the trees thin and the views expand across the western slopes. The trail is uneven and continues uphill, so keep a conversational pace and pause for water as needed. Weather can shift from warm forest conditions to cool wind on open ground, so carry a waterproof layer within reach. Arrive at Shira 1 Camp and allow the evening for food, hydration and rest.
Day 3

Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

Cross the Shira Plateau on a trail that offers broad views and a sense of Kilimanjaro’s scale when visibility is clear. The terrain is more open, with low vegetation and volcanic ground, and altitude may affect energy even where the path looks manageable. Walk with the group and follow the guide’s instructions at junctions and rest stops. At Shira 2 Camp, the crew will arrange the evening meal and explain the next day’s higher traverse.
Day 4

Shira 2 Camp to Moir Hut

Leave the main plateau trail and continue toward the Moir Hut area on a quieter section of the western high mountain. The landscape becomes increasingly rocky and exposed, with wide views that depend on cloud and weather. This stage is intended to progress gradually, but altitude can still cause symptoms, so report concerns promptly and do not try to outpace the group. On arrival, settle into camp, eat and keep warm as temperatures drop after sunset.
Day 5

Moir Hut to Buffalo Camp

Follow the route around the northern side of the mountain, crossing open slopes with views toward the plains below when the sky is clear. The trail includes gradual climbs and descents over high-altitude ground, where wind and sun exposure can be stronger than expected. Take regular breaks, protect your skin and drink often. Buffalo Camp provides a chance to rest before continuing the circuit; the guide will review how everyone is coping and confirm the following day’s plan.
Day 6

Buffalo Camp to Third Cave Camp

Continue along the northern circuit across remote, open terrain, with changing views of Kilimanjaro’s northern slopes and surrounding landscape. The walking is steady rather than a race, and the guide may adjust pace or rest intervals to suit the group’s condition. Keep warm layers and rain protection accessible because conditions can change quickly. Arrive at Third Cave Camp, eat a substantial meal and prepare for the next stage while prioritizing hydration and rest.
Day 7

Third Cave Camp to School Hut

Walk toward School Hut as the route reconnects with the upper mountain approach. The terrain becomes more austere, with sparse vegetation, rock and loose ground. Use a slow pace and keep the group together while the guide checks readiness for the summit attempt. At School Hut, have an early meal, organize warm clothing and headlamps, and listen carefully to the briefing on timing, weather, health checks and turnaround procedures. Rest as much as possible before departure.
Day 8

School Hut to Uhuru Peak and descent

Start the summit attempt at the time agreed with your guide, climbing slowly through cold, dark and high-altitude terrain toward the crater rim and Uhuru Peak if conditions allow. Reaching the summit is never guaranteed, and the guide may require a turnaround if anyone is unwell or conditions deteriorate. After the attempt, descend carefully to the scheduled camp for rest and recovery, following the exact descent plan confirmed by your operator.
