When Is the Best Time for a Tanzania Safari?

Discover what a Tanzania safari feels like in the dry and green seasons, and how to choose travel dates for Tarangire, Serengeti and Ngorongoro

There is no single best month for everyone. The right time depends on the wildlife you hope to see, the scenery you enjoy and how you want your trip to feel. Tanzania offers rewarding safaris throughout the year.

June to October: The dry season

The dry season is a popular choice for a first safari. Vegetation can be thinner, and animals often gather near reliable water. In Tarangire National Park, the river attracts wildlife during the dry months, making it a wonderful stop for elephant lovers. TANAPA

Mornings can feel cool, particularly around Ngorongoro, so bring a warm layer for early game drives. It also helps to book ahead if your travel dates are fixed.

The green season: Lush landscapes

The greener months bring fresh grass, changing skies and beautiful scenery for photography. Rain is possible, so your guide may adjust the day’s route to suit conditions.

This can be a lovely time to travel if you enjoy the landscapes and smaller details of a safari as much as the larger animals.

What about the Great Migration?

The Great Migration moves through the wider Serengeti ecosystem, but the herds do not follow an exact calendar. If it is the main reason for your trip, share your travel dates with your safari operator so they can recommend an area to visit. Allow time to enjoy the Serengeti itself: no river crossing or particular sighting can be guaranteed. tanzaniaparks.go.tz

Which parks should you include?

Tarangire offers baobab scenery and excellent opportunities to look for elephants, especially in the dry season. Serengeti offers wide-open landscapes and space to explore. Ngorongoro Crater adds a striking change of scenery to a northern Tanzania itinerary.

The number of days you have matters as much as the season. With a short trip, spending more time in fewer places can make the safari feel more relaxed.

So, when should you go?

Choose June to October if you prefer drier conditions and hope to see wildlife gathering near water. Consider the greener months if you love lush scenery and can be flexible when it rains. If the Great Migration is your priority, plan your route around your travel dates rather than expecting the herds in one place on a fixed day.
