Northern Circuit Parks Explained: Serengeti, Ngorongoro, Tarangire and Lake Manyara
Discover Tanzania's northern safari circuit. Compare Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Tarangire and Lake Manyara to decide which parks belong on your itinerary.
The northern circuit is Tanzania's best-known safari route and is easy to reach from Arusha. Each park offers something different, which is why they combine so well.
Serengeti National Park
Famous for endless plains, big cats and the Great Migration. It is the highlight of most itineraries and deserves at least two to three nights. Read our migration calendar to time your visit.
Ngorongoro Crater
A vast volcanic caldera with dense wildlife in a compact area. It is one of the best places in Africa to see black rhino, along with lions, hippos and flamingos in season.
Tarangire National Park
Known for large elephant herds and ancient baobab trees. It is especially good in the dry season, when animals gather along the Tarangire River.
Lake Manyara National Park
A scenic park below the Rift Valley escarpment, with rich birdlife, hippos and monkeys. Its tree-climbing lions are a famous attraction, though sightings are never guaranteed.

How to combine the northern parks
Each park offers a different experience, so the best itinerary depends on your priorities and available days. Serengeti is known for expansive plains and abundant wildlife, including the seasonal movements of wildebeest and zebra. Ngorongoro Crater offers a concentrated wildlife-viewing area within a dramatic volcanic landscape. Tarangire is especially known for elephants and baobab trees, while Lake Manyara can add forest, birdlife and varied scenery to a northern circuit.
Travel times between parks can be substantial, and road conditions and wildlife sightings may affect the daily schedule. Rather than trying to visit every park in a very short trip, choose a route that leaves enough time for game drives and overnight stays. Your accommodation location matters: staying near the area you plan to explore can reduce unnecessary driving. Ask your guide to explain park rules, wildlife-viewing etiquette and how to keep a respectful distance from animals.
